A 50% US tariff on about $20 billion of Canadian imports took effect Saturday, and Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will impose matching tariffs beginning Sept. 8.

Where they partAll camps accept the 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods took effect Saturday; they split on whether it is illegal usurpation, chaotic taxation, or strategic policy addressing imbalances.

  • The US imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods effective Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026, under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 (PBS News).
  • Trump's three proclamations cover about $20 billion of US imports from Canada, roughly 5% of total Canadian goods imports into the US, according to trade-law analysis (White & Case).
  • DISPUTED: Carney's own Saturday remarks put the tariffs' scope at roughly $28 billion of Canadian goods (Yahoo Finance), versus the ~$20 billion figure used in US trade-law summaries and PBS reporting (PBS News).sources conflict

  • This marks the first-ever use of Section 338 to raise tariffs, a Depression-era authority permitting levies up to 50% against countries found to discriminate against US commerce (RBC Economics).
  • Trump cited disputes over Canadian treatment of US autos, alcohol and cheese exports as the basis for the tariffs (PBS News).
  • Carney said trade talks broke down this past week after US negotiators "asked too much and offered too little," and announced Canada will impose matching "dollar for dollar" tariffs starting Sept. 8, targeting steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics (CNBC).
  • USTR Jamieson Greer said Canada "declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week," and that no further talks are scheduled (Fox News).
  • The US share of Canada's merchandise exports fell to 71.7% in 2025, down from 75.9% in 2024 and the lowest since the early 1980s, per Statistics Canada (Statistics Canada).
  • RBC Economics estimates the Canadian value-added content of the newly tariffed US imports amounts to about 0.4% of Canada's GDP (RBC Economics).

ContextTrump's use of Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 to raise tariffs is unprecedented, no US president had previously invoked the Depression-era authority for that purpose before this action (RBC Economics).

A Massachusetts jury will decide whether postpartum psychosis excuses Lindsay Clancy, who strangled her three children, as hundreds of women rally outside the courthouse in pink

The defense rested Friday after a forensic psychiatrist testified that Clancy was following a command hallucination when she killed Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan in January 2023.

Where they partCamps agree Clancy killed her three children after a psychiatric hospitalization; they split on whether her command hallucination excuses the killings or accountability still applies regardless.

Unexpected alignmentThe institutional right and the libertarian press both rejected the innocence theory circulating online while reaching opposite conclusions about whether the women promoting it deserve sympathy. [571][632]

  • Lindsay Clancy, 36, a former labor and delivery nurse, is on trial in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, charged with murder in the deaths of her three children in the basement of the family's Duxbury home in January 2023 (PBS News).
  • The children were Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, about 8 months old (PBS News).
  • After the killings Clancy jumped from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down (PBS News).

  • Clancy has pleaded not guilty; her defense does not dispute she killed the children but argues she is not criminally responsible due to postpartum psychosis (PBS News).
  • Defense witness Dr. Phillip Resnick, a forensic psychiatrist who evaluated Clancy months after the killings, testified she experienced "a command hallucination" and "a delusion of influence" and had resisted impulses to harm her children until being "overwhelmed" (CBS Boston).
  • The Plymouth County District Attorney's Office argues Clancy killed her children "deliberately and meticulously" and was not in a state of psychosis (CBS Boston).
  • The defense rested Friday, Aug. 21, 2026, and prosecutors have called rebuttal witnesses, with closing arguments expected the following week (PBS News).
  • Hundreds of supporters, mostly women wearing pink, rallied outside Plymouth Superior Court on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026, in support of Clancy (WBUR).
  • Postpartum psychosis, the illness at issue in the trial, affects an estimated 1 to 2 of every 1,000 women after delivery, according to PBS News reporting on the condition (PBS News).

ContextForensic psychiatrist Phillip Resnick, now testifying for Clancy's defense, previously testified in the 2001 case of Andrea Yates, a Texas mother who drowned her five children; Yates was initially convicted but found not guilty by reason of insanity on retrial in 2006 (GMA).

Texas has paused new data center development until state regulators audit grid connection plans, in a state with 335 operating data centers and at least 248 more planned.

Where they partCamps agree Abbott paused new Texas data centers pending a grid audit; they split on whether the freeze protects communities and the grid or needlessly chokes economic growth.

Unexpected alignmentA Republican governor in Texas and a socialist-aligned township board in Michigan reached the same instrument within four months of each other, a moratorium tied to utility hookups rather than to AI itself. [563][1102]

  • Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the Public Utility Commission of Texas and ERCOT to audit data centers seeking grid interconnection, pausing new project approvals until the review is complete (Houston Public Media).
  • The audit requires developers to disclose tax breaks, power use and generation, water use and cooling, efforts to limit impact on local communities, and facility ownership; Abbott said noncompliant projects will be denied grid connection (Utility Dive).
  • The audit is expected to cover about 250 to 300 projects, most of them data centers, amid more than 474 GW of ERCOT interconnection requests (Utility Dive).

  • Abbott said data center developers "dug their own grave" by not securing local community support, a reversal from his promotion of Texas as an AI "epicenter" less than a year earlier, including a $40 billion Google investment announcement (Washington Examiner).
  • Ypsilanti Township, Michigan's Board of Trustees unanimously passed a 180-day moratorium on major electric utility infrastructure on August 18, 2026, aimed at high-energy-demand facilities including data centers (WEMU-FM).
  • The moratorium targets a $1.2 billion, 220,000-square-foot data center project on Textile Road backed by the University of Michigan and Los Alamos National Laboratory, which includes a planned 110-megawatt DTE substation (Tom's Hardware).
  • The township had previously imposed a one-year moratorium on supplying water to data centers (Data Center Dynamics).
  • A Gallup poll published May 13, 2026 found seven in ten Americans oppose construction of AI data centers in their local area, with local data-center opposition (71%) exceeding opposition to local nuclear plants (53%) (Washington Post, Gallup).

ContextAbbott's audit covers roughly 250–300 pending projects out of over 474 GW in ERCOT interconnection requests, about 90% of it from data centers (Utility Dive).

Penske Corporation and the IndyCar series gained a first-of-its-kind race through the streets of the federal capital, an event its own president said cost more than the roughly $21 million a year Penske spends on the Detroit Grand Prix. Who pays: the District of Columbia and federal taxpayers cover the security, drawn from the $90 million Emergency Planning and Security Fund Congress appropriated in the FY2026 Financial Services and General Government Act for Presidential Events/NSSEs including America250 events (Congress.gov). The instrument is Executive Order 14381, "Celebrating American Greatness With American Motor Racing," directing the Secretaries of Transportation and the Interior to designate a route and issue permits "as expeditiously as possible," published in the Federal Register Feb. 4, 2026 after Denker says a route near the Capitol failed over roughly 100 congressional meetings (Federal Register). The connection is on the record: OpenSecrets' donor lookup shows Roger Penske gave $45,000 to Trump's 2020 campaign and $1.1 million to pro-Trump groups in the 2024 cycle, after receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Trump in 2019 (OpenSecrets; OpenSecrets). US spirits, dairy, and auto producers are the industries actually shielded by the new 50% Section 338 tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian imports that took effect this weekend, not steel and aluminum: the three proclamations behind the tariffs, signed July 20 and published July 23, cover alcoholic beverages, dairy, and motor vehicles specifically, a separate and unrelated action from the existing Section 232 steel/aluminum tariff regime (Federal Register: alcoholic beverages; Federal Register: dairy; Federal Register: motor vehicles). Who pays: American importers and consumers, who remit the tariff, and Canadian exporters in a country that sends 72% of its goods exports south. [414][420] The instrument is Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, never before used to raise tariffs, requiring no investigation and imposing the statutory maximum 50% ad valorem rate. President Trump made the decision; the on-record connection runs through the Distilled Spirits Council, which spent $3.65 million lobbying in 2024 with trade and alcohol among its top issues and said in a statement that Canadian provinces' "continued refusal to return US spirits products to store shelves" led to the retaliation (OpenSecrets). TikTok's new US ownership consortium ended a federal child-privacy lawsuit for $400 million, a sum the Justice Department itself called one of the largest recoveries ever obtained in a case under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, but one that is small against the company's scale. Who pays: TikTok and ByteDance, which is privately held and was most recently valued by investors at $550 billion. [441] The instrument is a settlement in United States v. ByteDance Ltd., No. 2:24-cv-06535 (C.D. Cal.), the COPPA suit the department filed Aug. 2, 2024: $300 million paid to the Justice Department immediately, and another $100 million when the government vacates a 2019 consent decree entered against TikTok's predecessor Musical.ly (DOJ; CourtListener). The decision was made by the Justice Department, whose assistant attorney general Brett Shumate said "Children and parents are better protected today than they were when this case began." The connection the department itself cited is ownership: it noted that since the 2024 suit was filed TikTok has "undergone significant changes to its ownership, management, compliance functions, and privacy practices," and TikTok's US operations are now roughly 80% owned by the Oracle/Silver Lake/MGX-led consortium and existing non-ByteDance investors, with ByteDance retaining about 19.9% (DOJ). Meta, which did not settle comparable claims, is now in a jury trial where penalties alleged by 29 state attorneys general could exceed hundreds of billions of dollars. [441]
