French school protests turn to riots, and fire guts Limoges's 19th-century city hall

Saturday's nationwide marches over schools and living costs ended in arson, looting and roughly 2,400 arrests, and Trump turned the scenes into an immigration argument for American voters.
The French rioting was a justified response to austerity and police violence.
Rioting is the voice of the unheard, and is completely inevitable once a spark of revolt arrives after months and years of austerity, extreme police violence and racism.

“Wherever there were no police [at the demonstrations] calm and joy were all around”Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise, quoted by Counterfire · blaming Macron's government and police tactics, rather than protesters, for the chaos in the streets
Counterfire's Paris correspondent wrote, placing blame on police baton charges and a decade of austerity.

“The narrative ignores any of the popular demands, including France’s out-of-control cost of living, a degraded school system, and legitimate explosive anger over the murderous violence the police unleashed on high schoolers at the beginning of the month.”Jacobin · arguing the right's immigration framing buries the movement's real grievances and police violence against students
“Western liberals imported the third world into France and other countries in the name of diversity and compassion.”JD Vance, US vice president, quoted by Jacobin · reacting to video of the burning Limoges town hall by blaming immigration and liberal policy
Jacobin called the American right's reaction, devoting its piece to Trump, Vance, Fox and OAN rather than to the rioters. Truthout kept the camera on police, reporting that "a 17-year-old permanently lost vision in one eye" after a tear gas canister hit her, and Novara led with Lecornu's curfews.

“conquered, looted, and burned to the ground by migrants, jihadists, and communists”Donald Trump, US president, quoted by The Guardian · telling a Kansas rally that France's unrest shows what is at stake in the US midterms
“the unrest in France offers Trump a familiar politcal opportunity: the chance to transform a crisis on the other side of the Atlantic into an argument in favor of the hard-line immigration policies”The Guardian · framing Trump's France rhetoric as a calculated domestic political play rather than a response to the protests' actual causes
the Guardian wrote of Trump's Kansas rally, treating the story as a U.S. midterm tactic.

“It survived two World Wars as a center of resistance to the Nazis during World War II and it is destroyed in these riots as an assault on something that's characteristically French.”Rich Lowry, National Review editor · treating the burning of Limoges city hall as proof the riots target French heritage, not school funding
Rich Lowry argued on National Review's channel, dismissing the school-funding explanation and naming failed assimilation of immigrants. The Examiner reported Trump's Kansas remarks as a warning to voters without adding its own verdict.

“what started as an education-quality/cost-of-living protest has been used to lodge all kinds of grievances, and is attracting allies with an unquenchable thirst for violence and destruction.”Liz Wolfe, Reason writer · arguing the riots have outgrown their original school and budget demands
“High social-program spending, an aging population, and high debt-to-GDP, plus an ever-increasing cost-of-living is resulting in a math problem that politicians have no real way out of except by raising the retirement age.”Liz Wolfe, Reason writer · framing France's fiscal bind as the unresolved backdrop to the unrest
Reason's Liz Wolfe wrote, arguing that a cost-of-living protest had been taken over.

“The rioters burning and pillaging cities across France are not led primarily by disgruntled students, as corporate media claim, but rather by a red-green alliance of communist activists and Muslim agitators, a recent investigation found.”The Federalist · rejecting the student-protest account and attributing the riots to an organized adult left-Islamist coalition
“The Islamo-Communist-led violence has destroyed priceless historic buildings and art, desecrated statues, including that of Saint Joan of Arc, France’s patron saint, and brought untold losses from rampant looting of businesses.”The Federalist · claiming the damage to French heritage and commerce is the work of this alliance
the Federalist wrote, citing a Fox investigation, and the Blaze called the unrest "ethnic riots." Breitbart devoted a piece to mocking the BBC's "mostly peaceful" line and another to Italy deploying soldiers in Milan, while Fox carried Speaker Johnson's warning that Democrats want the same "OPEN BORDERS." Across eleven receipts, the camp…

“The degeneracy was perhaps best summed up by an arson attack on the town hall of Limoges, a grand old building that survived two world wars before finally succumbing to the senseless spasms of the mob.”The American Conservative · using the burned Limoges town hall as a symbol of civilizational decay rather than a protest gone wrong
“If the ultra-left, criminals, and looters can turn France upside down in a matter of hours, it is first of all because a technocratic monarchy—intoxicated with its own self-importance—has methodically razed all the moral, security, cultural, and economic safeguards that allow a society to remain standing.”Vincent Trémolet de Villers, journalist, quoted by The American Conservative · blaming the French governing class, not the rioters alone, for the collapse of order
TAC wrote, ranking migration beside fiscal crisis and a "feckless political class" as causes. CBN's wire report, by contrast, printed that French authorities and police had not linked immigrants to the rioting, and CBN's video guest called the "immigration experiment" a failure.

“What starts with the Jews never ends with the Jews.”Sacha Roytman, CEO of the Combat Antisemitism Movement, quoted by The Algemeiner · warning that tolerating the unrest echoes the run-up to Kristallnacht and will spread beyond Jews
“The looting, the violence, and the attacks on law enforcement are neither social demands nor acts of resistance. They are acts of delinquency that must be punished with the utmost severity.”Bruno Benjamin, president of CRIF Marseille-Provence, quoted by The Algemeiner · rejecting the idea that the riots are legitimate protest and demanding harsh punishment after Jewish businesses were hit
the Algemeiner reported, the only outlet to lead with attacks on Jewish sites. It quoted the Combat Antisemitism Movement drawing a line to Kristallnacht while noting the events "are not comparable to the Holocaust." [565]
