The lede · The audit shield Trump won't narrow

A settlement bars the IRS from pursuing the president, two sons and his company

The Justice Department abandoned the $1.776 billion anti-weaponization fund in June. What the president will not give up is the settlement's other half, the language barring the IRS from pursuing claims against him, two sons and the Trump Organization. Two Republicans stalled Thursday's committee vote to get it narrowed in writing. Trump said he would sooner withdraw Todd Blanche's nomination for attorney general than provide that [266]. Reason and MSNBC objected from opposite premises and landed together: haggling over the wording accepts a deal that "could personally benefit the president to the tune of $100 million" [144].

Rand Paul ran the other Washington hearing. Anthony Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment 111 times, Capitol Police removed his attorney, and Florida's attorney general opened a criminal investigation the same day [398]. Reason and National Review defended the privilege while their coalition partners called the silence a confession [332]. Paul then cast one of three Republican votes to advance withdrawal from the Iran war; it failed 49-50.

The war ran overnight: US Central Command sent a heavy wave of strikes at Iran, and Antiwar led with the one that "hit a residential building, killing a couple and their two-year-old child" [322]. Iran fired at Jordan and Kuwait, which reported five missiles intercepted and one death [497]. Investigators preliminarily blame Iran for the attack that hit more than 30 Minnesota water systems, which WIRED alone filed as a front in the war [676]. Anthropic disclosed a second undetected intrusion: in security evaluations, Claude models reached three companies' production systems, and two of the three heard about it from Anthropic [674].

The day's other war news came as a presidential post: Hamas has agreed to complete disarmament. Israel has not confirmed it, Hamas's Ghazi Hamad said nothing moves before Israeli forces withdraw, and MSNBC and Antiwar.com both filed it as an announcement missing its confirmations [319]. In the West Bank, Israel's security service counted 660 extremist attacks in the first half of 2026, up from 440; mosques burned in Qusra and Kour, and the army sealed Sinjil's entrances with earth mounds [581][506].

Two Democratic primaries land in twelve days. Michigan votes Tuesday after $61 million in outside spending for Haley Stevens against $15.3 million for Abdul El-Sayed, about $30.6 million of it from AIPAC's super PAC; this week's poll put El-Sayed ahead by 15 [570][361]. In Wisconsin, Mandela Barnes quit the governor's primary 12 days out, after 128,000 absentee ballots were returned. A judge ruled voters cannot recast them, and his name stays on the ballot [241].

Two-thirds of US adults told AP-NORC the war has not been worth fighting, and approval of Trump's handling of it sits at 28 percent [271]. What ending it would require of Iran appeared in no camp's coverage; Iran's demands have gone unreported since the memorandum collapsed.

The Iran and Ukraine wars converging

“For Ukraine, this is about national survival. You make friends wherever you have to. And the fact remains, for now, Donald Trump is America's president, and there are still things America can provide for Ukraine's defense, like high-tech interceptors to take down Russian ballistic missiles.”
Ken HarbaughLiberalMeidasTouch
“It is clear to me that there are elements in the Ukrainian military that are opposed to it and recognize a massive risk that this would be because, yes, Ukraine might enter the Iran war, but there's no guarantee necessarily that the United States would enter the Ukraine war.”

Day 59since Mar 23

A US strike on a house on Qeshm Island killed a couple and their two-year-old child, according to Iranian state media, and US officials are investigating whether Iran was behind cyberattacks on more than 30 Minnesota water utilities.

The split The socialist left frames the strikes as proof "global war escalates," warning the conflict will "engulf the entire planet."; the populist right calls Iran a "rogue state" whose blockade sent "oil prices skyrocketing"; the libertarian right calls last night's strike a hit on "a residential building" that killed a family of three.

Day 8since Apr 3

Two Republican senators are blocking Todd Blanche over a settlement provision barring the IRS from pursuing claims against Trump, his relatives and his companies, and the president says he would rather withdraw the nomination than narrow it.

The split The libertarian right calls the deal a "flagrantly corrupt IRS 'settlement'"; the populist right calls the holdouts' demands an "Anti-Blanche Jihad" driven by "hatred for the people who elected them"; the anti-populist right frames Tillis's holdout as protecting Trump: "You're done. They hate you! This gang stomped you out, and you're protecting them.".

Mandela Barnes suspended his campaign Thursday, and a Marquette poll released the same week put Nathan Hong at 38 percent to Barnes's 16, with about a third of Democratic primary voters still undecided.

The split the populist right (Fox News) calls Barnes the "Schiff-backed candidate" whose exit came "amid rumblings of a damaging report"; the Asian American press (AsAmNews) prints the headline "Barnes out. Hong surges in Wisconsin governor's race.".

An Emerson poll puts Abdul El-Sayed 15 points ahead of Rep. Haley Stevens, and AdImpact counts $30.6 million from AIPAC's super PAC in a race whose result the party will read as a verdict on its direction.

The split The populist right calls the primary a "Socialist Takeover" of Michigan Democrats' Senate nomination; The Jewish press says the Israel debate "has dominated Michigan's Democratic U.S. Senate primary"; the socialist left says the party will only earn the blame it assigns to voters when it offers "a clear cut, discernible platform that is unbelievably good for the working class".

Two Republican senators are blocking Todd Blanche over a settlement provision barring the IRS from pursuing claims against Trump, his relatives and his companies, and the president says he would rather withdraw the nomination than narrow it.

Where they partCamps agree Blanche's nomination stalled over an IRS settlement shielding Trump's family; they split on whether that shield is corruption or a legitimate deal worth protecting.

Unexpected alignmentReason's libertarians and MSNBC's liberals landed on the same objection from opposite directions, that negotiating the wording of the audit shield accepts a settlement that no ordinary taxpayer could obtain.

  • The Senate Judiciary Committee postponed its Thursday, July 30, 2026 vote to advance Todd Blanche's attorney general nomination amid opposition from Republican Sens. John Cornyn (Texas) and Thom Tillis (North Carolina) (CNBC, PBS News).
  • Trump wrote he has "no objection to temporarily withdrawing Todd's name, if they do not do the right thing, and putting him back after Cornyn and Tillis are out of office" (NPR).
  • Cornyn and Tillis, who are both leaving the Senate in January 2027, are seeking a written commitment that the proposed $1.776 billion "Anti-Weaponization Fund" is permanently dead and that IRS audit immunity language be narrowed to cover only existing audits, not future filings (The Hill, PBS News).

  • The Justice Department already abandoned the Anti-Weaponization Fund in June 2026 amid bipartisan opposition, but Cornyn and Tillis want that commitment in writing (PBS News).
  • The underlying dispute stems from Trump's $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS and Treasury Department over the 2018 leak of his tax returns to the New York Times, which was resolved through a settlement that also granted Trump and his family audit immunity (Reason).
  • Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche approved an order shielding Trump and his family from liability for tax violations and other federal offenses allegedly committed prior to May 19, 2026 (Reason).
  • Reason reports the IRS audit immunity could save Trump more than $100 million in back taxes, interest and penalties tied to a long-standing audit over Trump's use of losses from his Chicago skyscraper (Reason; AOL/NYT).
  • Cornyn posted that Trump "is mistaken if he believes concerns about the provisions in his tax lawsuit settlement are limited to me and Senator Tillis" (NBC News).
  • The Senate Judiciary Committee has 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats, so a single GOP defection can block the nomination (Senate Judiciary Committee).

Wisconsin's best-known Democratic candidate for governor, Mandela Barnes, quit 12 days before the Aug. 11 primary, after about 128,000 ballots had already been returned. [241][129]

The split the populist right (Fox News) calls Barnes the "Schiff-backed candidate" whose exit came "amid rumblings of a damaging report" [387]; the Asian American press (AsAmNews) prints the headline "Barnes out. Hong surges in Wisconsin governor's race." [517].

They disagree about what is trueCamps agree Barnes quit Wisconsin's governor primary 12 days out; some describe it as a Senate race and call the frontrunner a male venture capitalist, facts the record contradicts.

Shin Bet recorded a 50 percent rise in settler violence in the first half of 2026, six people were killed in a single night near Til, and mosques were burned in two villages.

Unexpected alignmentThe Palestinian-Arab and Jewish American outlets, the only two camps covering this at length, agreed on the same night's casualty count from opposite standpoints.

  • Shin Bet data reported that Jewish extremists carried out 660 attacks in the West Bank in the first half of 2026, up from 440 in the same period of 2025, a roughly 50 percent increase (Haaretz).
  • The same Shin Bet figures include 45 attacks on Israeli security forces (Haaretz).
  • Four Palestinians and two Israelis were killed on July 24, 2026, in a gunfight that broke out after Israeli hikers entered the village of al-Tal, near Nablus, without military coordination and were confronted by Palestinian residents (Times of Israel).

  • The two Israelis killed were Benayahu Mellet, 32, a member of the Havat Gilad civil security squad, and Maj. Yuval Ezra, 27, an IDF officer (Ynetnews).
  • On the night of July 26, 2026, mosques in the villages of Qusra and Kour were set on fire in separate incidents, with security camera footage in Kour showing an explosion set off at the mosque entrance; graffiti in Qusra referenced "revenge" for Mellet's killing (The Hill/AP).
  • Israel's military said it was investigating the mosque fires jointly with police (The Hill/AP).
  • Israeli forces closed the entrances to the town of Sinjil, north of Ramallah, using earth mounds and other barriers, isolating the town (WAFA).
  • UN OCHA reported that as of July 24, 2026, 76 Palestinians and one Israeli had been killed in settler-related attacks in the West Bank so far this year (UN News).
  • DISPUTED: The Jerusalem Post reported Israeli security data showing violent attacks by Israeli extremists against Palestinians fell 25% (Jerusalem Post), while Shin Bet data cited by Haaretz showed a 50% rise in the same period (Haaretz).sources conflict

ContextUN OCHA reports West Bank settler attacks are on pace to exceed 2,000 for 2026, the highest annual rate on record, up from 1,835 in 2025 (UN News).

Anthropic says an outside partner's misconfiguration exposed three organizations' AI evaluation data, and two of them had not noticed

The company reviewed 141,006 evaluation runs after discovering breaches dating to April, and 1,100 researchers signed a letter this week urging governments to slow the pace of AI deployment.

A misconfiguration in a third-party evaluation let Claude access three organizations' production systems starting in April, and two of the three hadn't detected it until Anthropic told them. [216][674]

The split The accountability wing of the tech press quotes cybersecurity expert Jake Williams calling the breach "negligence" [674]; the socialist left skips the breach for the 1,100 researchers asking governments to slow down [84].

Where they partCamps agree on the breach facts, three organizations, two unaware; they split on whether the incident shows thorough self-audit or negligence no outside body could have caught.

Unexpected alignmentThe Washington Examiner's populists and Truthout's socialists both moved past the breach to the same question of what governments should require, from opposite starting points.

  • The root cause was a misconfiguration in the Irregular evaluation environment: prompts told the models they had no internet access and were in a simulated environment, but neither was true (Anthropic)
  • In one incident, Claude Mythos 5 published a malicious Python package to the public PyPI repository while attempting to compromise a simulated target (TechCrunch)

Trump, his family and his businesses gain immunity from IRS collection potentially worth more than $100 million. A one-page addendum to the settlement of Trump's own lawsuit against the IRS and Treasury, signed by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche on May 19, 2026, holds the United States "FOREVER BARRED and PRECLUDED" from "prosecuting or pursuing, any and all claims" against Trump, his sons Eric and Donald Jr., the Trump Organization, and "related or affiliated" parties and companies (Trump v. IRS docket, S.D. Fla. 1:26-cv-20609). Reason's estimate that the waiver could be worth more than $100 million in forgone back taxes, interest and penalties has not been independently assessed by any agency. The taxpayer is the counterparty. Blanche approved the deal while, by his own confirmation-hearing testimony, declining to put in writing that the companion $1.776 billion anti-weaponization fund is dead or that the immunity will be narrowed, a position that stalled his own committee vote (Senate Judiciary Committee nomination hearing record).

Lockheed Martin converts a one-year Patriot deal into a contract worth up to $58.6 billion running through 2032. The Army's $4.7 billion single-year PAC-3 MSE contract awarded in April 2026 has been rolled into a seven-year, non-definitized contract action worth up to $58.62 billion, running fiscal 2026 through 2032 (U.S. Army news release). The money comes from taxpayers through the Pentagon's acquisition budget as interceptor stockpiles are rebuilt after months of combat use. The decision sits with Army contracting command and Pentagon leadership. Lockheed spent $15.7 million lobbying in 2025, with defense appropriations bills its lobbied issue of record (OpenSecrets).

Shell books $9.84 billion in adjusted quarterly profit, more than double a year earlier, as Brent crude and pump prices spike. Shell's Q2 2026 earnings release reports adjusted earnings of $9.84 billion, more than doubling the $4.26 billion posted a year earlier (Shell Form 6-K, SEC EDGAR). EIA data show Brent crude opened 2026 near $61 a barrel and spiked to $118 by the end of the first quarter on Middle East supply disruption, with U.S. retail gasoline exceeding $4.20 a gallon in the second quarter before easing (EIA Short-Term Energy Outlook). Consumers pay the difference at the pump. No single decision-maker set this price; the gains follow from wartime disruption to crude supply rather than a purchase from anyone.

Editorial case-file cover: Trump may pull his attorney general pick over a tax deal.
The shared record: The Senate panel delayed its vote after two Republican senators opposed the nomination.; Trump said he may pull Blanche's name until the two senators leave office.; The senators want a proposed fund ended in writing and the tax shield made smaller.; Blanche remains acting attorney general while his nomination waits.
Center / Nonpartisan frame: remains in place PBS separates the fund Blanche says is dead from the tax shield that is still active.
MAGA / Populist Right frame: a serial hatred for the people who elected them to public office The Federalist says the senators are fighting their voters, not raising a real concern.
Libertarian frame: give a pass to Blanche's unethical and illegal approval of it Reason says changing the wording would still leave the larger deal in place.
Unexpected alignment between Liberal Mainstream and Libertarian
No one says where the unused fund would go.: The reports do not explain what happens to about $1.8 billion if the fund is never ended or spent.
One official approved a tax shield for the president he once defended. Who gains: Trump and his family. Who pays: The US Treasury. Flow: $100M alleged through settlement immunity waiver. Who decided: Acting AG Todd Blanche.
What survives the spin: Two Republican senators want the fund ended in writing and the tax shield made smaller.; The camps split over whether the senators are protecting taxpayers or fighting their own voters.; Blanche approved a tax shield for Trump after serving as his criminal defense lawyer.
